One of the primary things we do as a computer repair service is virus removal. Much of the latest work has been a virus that typically comes through an infected website link or a fraudulent email receipt. On some occasions, my clients have said it was through something they clicked on in Facebook. There are multiple, well known, anti-virus brands available and quite a few of them have been around a long time. But just because they have been around a long time doesn’t mean they are good. As a computer repair expert who has over 20 years experience, I feel my recommendation should help you. Also, because of all the client’s computers I have installed it on, I have only ever had one minor issue. First, let me tell you popular brands I don’t recommend. McAfee is awful. It does not have good detection algorithms and I think I have fixed more computers with virus infections that had it than I have any other. Norton 360 is terrible because it takes up way too many system resources which slows your computer down. AVG is not bad but it seems to be not user friendly. I honestly don’t know much about Kaspersky but I seldom ever hear of anyone who uses it. Bitdefender is pretty good but it’s complicated trying to figure out how to get only the free version and too many unnecessary pop-ups.
The anti-virus I use and install on all my client’s computers is Avast. Why do I like it? For starters, the free version is more than sufficient. It works well for detection and is light weight which means it won’t slow your computer down. It’s user friendly and you can set it on silent mode so you don’t get a lot of pop-ups wanting you to upgrade. One side note, it is important in Settings with Avast that you also set it to not rescan wireless networks. You will find that in Settings/Protection. It’s also important to note during installation, after download, to “uncheck” the box bottom left to install their secure browser. You don’t need it. That is overkill. It’s also important for you to understand that this is NOT a paid endorsement! I simply like helping people as a Christian and the owner of Absolute Computer Repair. Helping my clients get their computers fixed quickly, at an affordable price and with friendly respect.
