One of the primary services we provide at Absolute Computer Repair is malware and virus removal. Much of the malware we see comes from infected or deceptive website links, fraudulent email receipts and other messages designed to trick people into clicking something they shouldn’t. On some occasions, clients have also told me their problems began after clicking something they saw on Facebook.
There are many well-known antivirus and security programs available, and some of those brands have been around for decades. But longevity doesn’t necessarily mean a product is the best choice for your computer.
I’ve worked in computer repair for more than 20 years, and I’ve installed, removed and worked around a lot of different security programs on clients’ computers. Based on that hands-on experience, my current top recommendation is Malwarebytes.
MALWAREBYTES — MY TOP PICK – This is what I use myself and this is not a paid recommendation.
For clients who can afford a paid security product, Malwarebytes is now my preferred choice.
Malwarebytes has developed into a comprehensive security product designed to protect against malware, ransomware, malicious websites and other modern threats. I also find it straightforward enough for the average computer user, which is important. Security software isn’t much help if it’s so complicated that people don’t understand what it’s doing.
The paid version provides real-time protection, which is an important distinction from simply having an on-demand malware scanner.
If you’re willing to pay for your computer’s security, Malwarebytes is the antivirus/security solution I currently recommend.
WHAT IF YOU DON’T HAVE THE BUDGET?
If paying for Malwarebytes isn’t in your budget, Avast Free Antivirus remains my preferred free alternative.
I’ve installed Avast on many clients’ computers over the years, and my experience with it has generally been very good. The free version provides useful protection without requiring someone to purchase a subscription.
There are, however, a few settings I recommend changing after installing Avast.
SETTING AVAST TO SILENT MODE
Avast can display notifications and promotional messages that many users don’t need or want. After installation, I recommend enabling Silent Mode/Do Not Disturb Mode where available so Avast can continue doing its job without constantly interrupting you.
You should also review Avast’s Wi-Fi/network scanning settings.
In Avast’s settings, locate the network protection options and turn OFF:
• Inspect New Wi-Fi Networks
• Automatically Rescan Networks
I recommend disabling those options to prevent Avast from repeatedly inspecting or rescanning networks when that isn’t necessary for the way most of my clients use their computers.
Also pay attention during installation. If Avast offers to install additional software, such as its Secure Browser, don’t automatically accept it. If you don’t want or need the additional browser, uncheck that option before continuing with the installation.
WHAT ABOUT THE OTHER BRANDS?
Over the years I’ve worked on computers running McAfee, Norton, AVG, Bitdefender and many other security products. My preferences are based largely on what I’ve encountered while repairing real computers, simplicity of use and what I consider light weight options that don’t slow your computer down.
I’ve frequently encountered infected computers that had McAfee installed, so it has never been one of my preferred recommendations.
Norton has historically been another product I haven’t favored, particularly because security suites can add features and background processes that many of my clients simply don’t need.
AVG can provide protection, but I’ve generally found other products easier for my clients to use.
Bitdefender has a good reputation and is certainly a legitimate security product, but I haven’t found it as straightforward for the typical clients I support.
Security products change over time, so today’s version of any antivirus shouldn’t necessarily be judged entirely by what the product was like years ago. My recommendations are based on what I currently prefer for the computers I service.
MY RECOMMENDATION
If your budget allows it:
Malwarebytes — My first choice.
If you need a free solution:
Avast Free Antivirus — My preferred free alternative, with the settings adjustments described above.
And remember: no antivirus program can protect you from every threat.
Be suspicious of unexpected email receipts, invoices, account warnings and messages telling you that you must click a link immediately. Be careful about links on social media, and never allow an unexpected caller or pop-up message to convince you to give someone remote access to your computer.
A good security program is an important layer of protection, but careful browsing and good judgment are still part of keeping your computer safe.
